Keeping the women and children
of our community well
South of Market Health Center provides a wide array of general services for women and children. SMHC has developed a program that offers compassionate services in a patient centered environment.
Services for women include acute and chronic care management, breast and cervical cancer detection and treatment, family planning, reproductive health. Pediatric and adolescent patients can receive regular wellness check-ups, immunizations and timely treatment when they are sick. The combined service area allows women with young children to remain together, be examined together if they wish and to develop a relationship with the medical staff who can get to know them as a family. SMHC has developed a patient-centered model for our Women's and Children's Unit that incorporates patient's experiences and encourages shared decision-making. The results will be improved treatment outcomes and a higher rate of treatment adherence and/or compliance.
Because of the large numbers of new families in the area, we have a growing roster of obstetric patients and newborn patients. When specialty care is necessary, we provide consultation and referral of the obstetric patient or newborn patient to a specialized institution for treatment.
Here is a list of services we provide:
- Comprehensive physical exams
- Health Screenings and risk reduction counseling
- Mammography referrals and follow up
- Pregnancy testing
- Prenatal substance abuse program referrals
- Prenatal care and delivery referral program
- After delivery care and care of infants and children
- Contraceptive (birth control) education, counseling, follow up and maintenance
- On-site diagnosis and treatment and counseling for sexually transmitted infections
- Routine screening for breast and cervical cancer
- Health education in community settings to promote reproductive health, to prevent unintended pregnancy and to promote access to reproductive and preventive health services
- Mammography referrals and follow up
