Meet
our Executive Director

Charles Range
Charles Range’s involvement
with community clinics began as a board member with the
Charles Drew Medical Center in East Palo Alto. After five
years as a board member, Range resigned in 1975 to become
Drew Medical Center’s Executive Director. He remained
with Drew for 15 years leaving in 1990 to accept his current
position as Executive Director of South of Market Health
Center.
When Range arrived at SMHC, the clinic had been severely
damaged from the Loma Prieta Earthquake, faced imminent
closure and had a $300,000 deficit. As Executive Director
he was able, within a short period of time, to eliminate
the deficit, secure the clinic’s operations and
viability, and convince the City to help defray the costs
of essential repairs from damage sustained in the earthquake.
By the mid-nineties Range had guided the Board of Directors
through an elaborate strategic planning process that resulted
in a new management team and defined a clear course of
action for bringing this health center into the 21st century
as a state-of-the-art health care program. By the year
2000 SMHC completed its first expansion, adding a satellite
clinic for seniors and a total remodel and expansion of
dental services. By 2003, SMHC launched its first Capital
Campaign to construct a new building.
For Range, balance in life is important, and a big part
of this personal balance has been his love of basketball.
He was a player in high school and college, and went on
to serve as an assistant basketball coach for 4 years
at Stanford University. In 1964 he joined the Pacific
10 Conference as a basketball official. This was the beginning
of a 37 year career that included 27 years at the NCAA
level and extended over several divisional conferences.
According to Range he has seen a lot of similarities between
the discipline required for a referee and his work in
community health.
When asked about his work Range, who loves a challenge
adds, “I love my job. I love helping those who have
a difficult time accessing healthcare. I love working
with this community. It’s a joy to work in this
field and to help others.” |
