Making access to quality healthcare a constant in a diverse community

The South of Market Area (SOMA) has always been one of the more affordable neighborhoods in San Francisco and therefore, home to a large number of lower-income people. While the dot com boom of the 90s displaced many of these residents, new housing projects have restored affordability to the area, increasing the demand for SMHC's services.

Our clients are a diverse mix of homeless individuals, residents of the area’s single room occupancy (SRO) hotels, seniors and immigrant families. Yet they all share the daily struggle of trying to get by in one of the nation’s most expensive cities. In fact, over half of our clients are living below the poverty level and only about one-third are covered by Medi-Cal. They often have a combination of mental and physical health problems that prevent them from living the lives they deserve. We believe that by helping our clients overcome these health challenges, we are planting the seeds of a thriving community.

Building on our success:
In Spring 2008, we’re expanding to our new Westbrook Plaza building. This joint project with Mercy Housing California will include 48 units of affordable housing and a new health center.

Treating the whole person:
Our range of medical, dental and support services have been designed around the specific needs of our clients.

Delia's story:

Delia is a single mom, and has been a patient of the clinic since she was a child. She works as substitute teacher at South of Market Childcare Center and spends her free time playing with her 7-year daughter, Daniela. In Delia’s own words, “I’m a single parent. It’s not hard. I got used to it. I did it on my own without my family supporting me. I try the best I can to make it work with my daughter.”
