Delia's story:

Delia is a 28 year-old single mom and has been coming to SMHC since she was six years old. Her grandparents were patients at SMHC. They brought the rest of Delia’s family to San Francisco from the Philippines.

According to Delia, “It’s great here at the clinic. I like it here. The nurses are nice. If I’m sick, I’ll come here. Or if my foot hurts. I come here for everything.”

Delia loves kids and works as a substitute teacher at the South of Market Childcare Center. When not working, she spends time with her 7 year-old daughter, Daniela. She explains, “I take my daughter out to play in the playground. I have to take care of her before myself. Being a single parent is hard, but I’ve gotten used to it. My family is here, but they’re not really helping me. I did it on my own without their support. I try the best I can to make it work with my daughter.”

Delia proudly adds, “My daughter likes to read books. She helps me clean, do the dishes, and sometimes she cooks too. But I’m there to help her. She made me spaghetti for Mother’s Day and now she wants to take me out for my birthday.”

Hoping to move to Las Vegas in eight or nine years, Delia also wants to travel around so her daughter can see more things. “My daughter wants to be a doctor when she grows up and tells me she’ll be beside me forever.”

Meet Delia:
“It’s great here at the clinic. I like it here. The nurses are nice. If I’m sick, I’ll come here. Or if my foot hurts. I come here for everything.”

Meet Robert:
“Some clinics I’ve been to, they just give you your medication and that’s it. They don’t want to talk or discuss anything. That’s why I come back to this clinic.”

Meet Beulah:
“I didn’t know how important it was to take my medication. I used to skip it. If it wasn’t for my nosy doctor, I wouldn’t be here today.”

Meet Bruce:
“I really can’t see going anywhere else. I have history with this place. Going somewhere else would be like creating a whole new family.”
