Bruce's story:

Bruce is 47 years old and has been coming to SMHC for 18 of the 22 years he has lived in San Francisco. He was referred to SMHC after suffering a deep depression. Since then, he has been treated for a variety of other health problems. He says, “I really can’t see going anywhere else. I have history with this place. Even though they’ve gone through many doctors, there’s a lot of staff here that have been here ever since I’ve been coming here. Going somewhere else would be like creating a whole new family.”

Bruce represents SMHC at the San Francisco Community Clinic Consortium and for the five years, he has gone to Washington DC to advocate for community health funding. In his spare time, Bruce makes greeting cards with the hopes of opening his own business one day. He says it helps with his depression.

Bruce adds, “I call the cards With Love Productions and would like to hire the homeless as employees. I’d like to be able to help them out. It’s not about being financially secure, but making sure others benefit. That’s what I’d like to leave behind when I’m gone.”

Meet Delia:
“It’s great here at the clinic. I like it here. The nurses are nice. If I’m sick, I’ll come here. Or if my foot hurts. I come here for everything.”

Meet Robert:
“Some clinics I’ve been to, they just give you your medication and that’s it. They don’t want to talk or discuss anything. That’s why I come back to this clinic.”

Meet Beulah:
“I didn’t know how important it was to take my medication. I used to skip it. If it wasn’t for my nosy doctor, I wouldn’t be here today.”
