Bringing compassion and consistency
to our community’s healthcare
SMHC is a non-profit community
health center that provides comprehensive medical, dental
and podiatry services to individuals, children and families
who have difficulty getting healthcare. We are a full-service
clinic in the South of Market Area, providing high quality
healthcare to over 5,000 patients every year. At SMHC,
we have built our success on understanding and meeting
the unique healthcare needs of our community.
Many of the families and individuals treated at SMHC
have little or no healthcare coverage. Without health
insurance, people typically postpone basic care such
as immunizations and physicals, and ignore early or
tolerable symptoms. Subsequently, they tend to end up
in emergency departments with more serious illnesses
that are untreatable or require more costly treatment.
SMHC provides a safe and comfortable place where these
families and individuals can easily access quality medical
care. We are dedicated to preventing factors such as
income and lifestyle from determining who receives health
care.
SMHC staff possess a unique combination of experience
and skills required to address the health issues of
our community. We are also trained to provide care that
is sensitive to our clients’ beliefs, values and
customs. This experience and training gives us a better
understanding of each client and the steps required
to help them achieve both their health and life goals.
We also build relationships with other private and public
providers to ensure our clients receive the necessary
range of medical, psychological and social services.
Through this “safety net” of providers,
we can help our clients overcome the multiple challenges
they face obtaining services and specialty care. As
an advocate for the needs and healthcare interests of
all residents living in the South of Market Area and
Tenderloin communities, we also help to ensure they
have the healthcare professionals, services and facilities
they need. |
